Introduction to Sanskrit Chitrakavya

Sanskrit Chitrakavya: Live Online Workshop

  • Get introduced to many meritorious types of Sanskrit Poetry (padya) - containing some intellectual games such as samasyāpūrti, delightful dialogues, and jokes demonstrating a wide range of Sanskrit Chitrakavya

The Sanskrit language has massive literature in verse and poetry forms. Chitrakavya is an extraordinary way of creating Sanskrit poetry. Chitra means picture or variety, and Kavya is poetry. Thus chitrakavya can be explained as "variety of poetry" or "picture poetry". Chitra-kavya is an ancient Indian tradition of writing poetry in visual patterns by play of meaning (shabdalankāra) (based on a brilliant flexible arrangement of letters, words, and sound). People usually think that Sanskrit is all about deep and serious thoughts, and discussions about human life, ethics, and morality but this amazing language also has something astonishing to offer in terms of Chitra Kavya!

Curriculum

  • Day 1: Introduction to Sanskrit Poetry - काव्य (kāvya) What is छन्दस् (chandas) | पद्य (padya) and elements of पद्य (padya)

  • Day 2: समस्यापूर्ती samasyāpūrtī Verses where the poet receives one-quarter of poetry as a challenge. That quarter or one-liner makes no sense if referred to individually. The poet takes up the challenge and creates other three quarters in such a way that a given one-liner magically becomes meaningful

  • Day 3: प्रहेलिका prahelikā A Sanskrit composition that resembles the modern-day riddles where an object is described using self-contradictory statements and a person is asked to guess the object

  • Day 4: कूटम् kūṭam These Sanskrit verses make no sense but contain the words having puns. Once we obtain another meaning from the hidden words, the verse becomes meaningful.

  • Day 5: संवाद (saṃvāda) Composing the poem in dialogue or संवाद (saṃvāda) form is an ancient art of writing. In Rigveda, the oldest known literature in human history, we find as many as seven dialogue hymns that depict some legendary story.

  • Day 6: चित्रबन्ध citrabandha चित्रबन्ध-काव्य citrabandha-kāvya is a kind of poetry where each syllable in the verse can be picturesquely patterned into designs such as flower, snake, muraja (mridanga), geometric patterns such as square, rectangle, circle, or they form two meanings simultaneously
