Introduction to Yoga Philosophy

Yoga for Happiness and Peace of Mind

  • Understand Yoga as a philosophy and way of life, something much more than Yoga asanas

Yoga, a physical, mental, and spiritual practice, was introduced to us around the sixth and fifth centuries BC. The word Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’, is understood as the union of body, mind, and consciousness through the way of Karma, Bhakti, Jnana along with intellect (knowledge) obtained through a Guru, about Sat (Reality of Self), Cit (Consciousness or Brahmam or Atma), Anandham (Bliss). In Upanishads, Yoga is defined as the steady control of the senses, which, together with the cessation of mental activity, leads to a supreme state. In modern classical texts, Sage Patanjali, who systematized and codified the practice of Yoga, states the same in the second sutra of the first chapter as ‘yogah citta vritti nirodhah’. Yoga is righteous conduct in the way of life itself. This helps to experience a balanced and peaceful way of life.

In this course, we aim to cover Yoga from the perspective of the birth cycle (samsara) based on one’s accumulation of pava punya (karma), conduct in life (dharma), peace, and bliss (moksha) through the yogic way of life. We will also see the practical session on yoga asana (body), and pranayama (mind) for the pathway into spiritual practice.
