Over the time the use of Sanskrit reduced
Sanskrit has been an Important language in India.

Sanskrit used as an administration language in earlier times - that is in the courts of the kings - while giving orders and inscribing in temples or stones.

Various dynasties that ruled in middle ages affected use of the Sanskrit. Gupta dynasty accepted Buddhism as well as - some other dynasties moved to Jainism, which caused the change in administration language to Pali or Prakrit.

Later on Central Asian dynasties took over and they brought Persian as the language of administration.

By this time, local kings adapted regional language for administration purpose.

Later on British rulers used English for administrative purpose, and they even changed the Gurukula system which was the base of the Indic knowledge stream.

All these events caused Sanskrit to be used less and less. Even Independent India accepted regional languages for administration purpose. Currently in India, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh declared Sanskrit as a official language of their state.

Various online courses / initiatives / institutes coming up with spoken Sanskrit and other courses and Sanskrit is again gaining popularity.
