The timeline of Sanskrit language
Sanskrit has been an Important language in India.

Sanskrit was used as an administration language in earlier times - that is in the courts of the kings while giving orders and inscribing in temples or stones. In fact not just for administration purpose but the religion, art, science related texts were in Sanskrit as well. Later on, the Central Asian dynasties took over and they brought Persian as the language of administration.

In rencent history, the British rulers used English for administrative purpose, and they even changed the Gurukula system which was the base of the Indic knowledge stream.

All these events caused Sanskrit to be used less and less. Even Independent India accepted regional languages for administration purpose. Due to colonization, English became language of administration in a lot of countries.

In case of Tamil language, various inside or outside invasions stayed limited to northern or central part of the country. The Tamil culture mostly stayed intact over this period. That’s why Sanskrit is not spoken as much as English or Tamil.
